What about why stay in a homestay instead of a hotel in mawlynnong?

Mawlynnong is a genuinely small village, there's no hotel-chain option here even if you wanted one. Homestays are the accommodation, not an alternative to it, and staying with a family is also how you actually get shown the parts of the village a day-tripper misses: the living root bridge's older, quieter neighbour, the best viewpoint for the Bangladesh plains, which hours the Riwai bridge is least crowded.
