Mawlynnong itself is the main attraction, a village known for its cleanliness and the nearby Living Root Bridge. For wider exploration of the Khasi Hills, you will need to plan for day trips by car.
From Shillong, the region's hub, you can reach several key sights. Ward's Lake is a 19th-century landmark in the city, good for a quiet walk or paddle boating. The Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures offers a deep dive into the region's tribes across seven floors. A short drive out of town, Elephant Falls is an easy half-day trip to see its three-tiered cascade. For views, Shillong Peak is the highest point in the state at 1,965m. Further afield, Laitlum Canyons offers dramatic ridge-top views about 25km from the city. The Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a protected Khasi forest, is best explored with a local guide.
The standard arrival point for Meghalaya is Guwahati, which has the nearest major airport and railhead. By air: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati is about 100km away, a 3-hour drive to Shillong. Shillong also has its own airport at Umroi (SHL), 30km from the city, but it has limited flights and can be affected by weather. By rail: Guwahati Railway Station is the closest major railhead, about 100km from Shillong. There is no rail connectivity in Meghalaya itself. By road: From Guwahati or Shillong, you will need to hire a taxi to reach Mawlynnong. The drive from Shillong takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
The best time for clear skies and valley views is from October to April. The weather is pleasant for walking and day trips. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings the famous Khasi rain. While Shillong remains mostly accessible, the heavy downpours can cause some sights in the surrounding hills to close temporarily.
