The home is well-placed to explore the main sights of the Khasi Hills. It sits between Shillong and Cherrapunji, making it a good base for day trips.
The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous, the Nongriat double-decker bridge, is a challenging but rewarding trek down 3,500 steps into the valley.
Near Cherrapunji (Sohra), you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves. These limestone caves offer a glimpse into the region's unique geology, with well-lit passages in Mawsmai and more adventurous spelunking opportunities elsewhere.
The Umngot river at Dawki, near the Bangladesh border, is famous for its crystal-clear water, which makes boats look like they are floating on air. The clarity is best between January and March.
Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, is a short drive away. You can walk through its pristine lanes and climb the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo structure offering views over the plains of Bangladesh.
Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, is a powerful sight, especially during or just after the monsoon.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. It’s a 3-hour drive from the airport to Shillong, the region's main hub. A smaller airport at Shillong (SHL) is 30km away but has limited connectivity, mostly via Kolkata.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, 100km from Shillong. Meghalaya itself does not have a rail network. Taxis are available at the station for the onward journey.
By Road: Shillong is the central hub for travel within Meghalaya. This home is in Mawkdok, on the main road to Cherrapunji (Sohra), which is a 53km, 2-hour drive from Shillong. Dawki is about 95km from Shillong.
The best time to visit the Khasi & Jaintia Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant, and the skies are generally clear. This is the ideal season for trekking and caving.
The monsoon, from June to September, is intense. The region receives over 10,000mm of rainfall, turning the landscape an impossible shade of green. While waterfalls are at their most spectacular, some caves and trek routes may be closed due to the rain.
