The home is a good starting point for the region's main sights. The living root bridges are a worth seeing, particularly the famous double-decker bridge in Nongriat, which requires a descent of 3,500 steps. Near Cherrapunji (Sohra), you can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, two of the most accessible cave systems in Meghalaya.
Head towards the Bangladesh border to find Dawki and the Umngot river. From January to March, the water is so clear it looks like boats are floating on air. Nearby is Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, with its bamboo sky walk offering views over the plains of Bangladesh. Don't miss Nohkalikai Falls, at 340 metres, it is India's tallest plunge waterfall.
By air: The standard arrival airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. The drive from Guwahati to Shillong takes about 3 hours. A smaller airport is at Umroi, Shillong (SHL), 30km from the city centre, with limited flights, mostly connecting through Kolkata.
By rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, 100km from Shillong. There is no rail network within Meghalaya.
By road: Shillong is the state capital and the central hub for travel to Cherrapunji (53km, 2-hour drive), Dawki (95km), and Mawlynnong. Taxis and shared cabs are available from Shillong and Guwahati.
The best season to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The monsoon, from June to September, is intense, with the region receiving over 10,000mm of rain. During this time, some waterfalls and caves may be closed, but the landscape is exceptionally green and alive with clouds.
