What about why stay in a homestay instead of a hotel near dawki?

There's very little hotel infrastructure in Dawki itself, most travellers either day-trip from Shillong (about 2.5 hours) or stay in a riverside homestay for the boating light in early morning and evening, before and after the day-tripper crowds. A host here is also the fastest way to know which stretch of the Umngot is clearest on a given day, water clarity varies with recent rainfall even in the dry season.
