Shillong sits at 1,500m, so even peak summer stays cool and the weather can turn from sun to fog in twenty minutes. The homestays that handle this best are the ones with actual heating or good insulation (a lot of budget listings only have a blanket and hope), and hosts who know current road conditions to Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong, since Meghalaya's hill roads close for landslides more often than most travellers expect, especially June to September.
The second thing worth checking is water supply. Shillong's water table is a known local issue, and the better-run homestays store enough to get through dry spells without you finding out the hard way at 7am.

Best neighbourhoods to stay in Shillong
Police Bazar is the commercial centre, walkable to most restaurants and the taxi stands for day trips. Convenient but the busiest and loudest part of town.
Laitumkhrah is quieter and popular with longer-stay guests, close to NEHU and a good cluster of local cafés.
Upper Shillong and the Umiam Lake road are for travellers who want pine forest and a view over the city or the lake, at the cost of a 20-30 minute drive into town for anything you need.
Golf Course and Barapani side put you closest to Umiam Lake itself if that's the main draw, with a genuinely different, quieter pace than Police Bazar.

Best time to visit Shillong
October to April is the reliable window: cool, mostly dry, and the road network into Cherrapunji and Dawki is at its best. December can get properly cold at night, worth checking a homestay actually has heating rather than just extra blankets.
June to September is the monsoon, when Meghalaya turns genuinely green and the waterfalls around Cherrapunji are at their most dramatic, but it's also when roads are most likely to see landslide closures. Good for travellers who don't mind unpredictability; riskier if your itinerary is tight.
