The Khasi and Jaintia Hills are a landscape of waterfalls, caves, and bridges grown from living trees. The home is a starting point for some of Meghalaya’s most well-known sights.
The living root bridges are a short drive and a long walk away. The most famous, the Nongriat double-decker bridge, requires a descent of 3,500 steps into the valley. It’s a demanding but rewarding trek; start early and carry water.
Nearby caves like Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut offer a look underground. Mawsmai is lit and easy for most visitors, while others are wilder. A guide is recommended for any serious caving.
The Umngot river in Dawki, near the Bangladesh border, is known for its impossibly clear water. The effect is best from January to March, before the monsoon rains arrive. You can hire a boat for a slow drift down the river.
Mawlynnong is often called Asia’s cleanest village. It’s a community effort, with bamboo dustbins and tidy gardens. Nearby, the Riwai sky walk offers a view over the canopy from a bamboo platform.
Nohkalikai Falls is India’s tallest plunge waterfall, dropping 340 metres from a clifftop. The viewpoint is easily accessible, but the full force of the water is most dramatic during and just after the monsoon.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), about a 3-hour drive (100km) from Shillong. It’s the standard arrival point for Meghalaya. A smaller airport is at Umroi, near Shillong (SHL), 30km from the city, with limited flights, mostly from Kolkata. From Shillong, Cherrapunji is a further 2-hour drive.
By Rail: Meghalaya has no rail lines. The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, Assam (100km from Shillong). From the station, you can hire a taxi for the journey into the hills.
By Road: Shillong is the region’s main road hub. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53km from Shillong, a winding 2-hour drive. Taxis are readily available from Shillong and Guwahati.
The best season to visit is from October to April, when the skies are clearer and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal time for trekking and caving. The monsoon, from June to September, is an experience in itself. The region receives over 10,000mm of rain, turning the landscape an intense, vivid green. Waterfalls are at their most powerful, but some caves and trails may be closed.
