The home is in Shillong, a good point from which to explore the Khasi Hills. Ward's Lake, a 19th-century landmark, is a short drive away for a walk among the rhododendrons or a paddle boat ride. For a look into the region's culture, the Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures is a seven-storey collection covering the tribes of Northeast India.
For views, Shillong Peak is the highest point in the area at 1,965 metres. On a clear day, you can see the entire valley. About 25km east are the Laitlum Canyons, a dramatic ridge known locally as the 'end of the hills'. A half-day trip can take you to the three-tiered Elephant Falls, 12km from town. These longer trips to places like Cherrapunji or Dawki require a dedicated car.
Getting there.
The most common way to arrive is by air into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is 100km away. The drive to Shillong takes around three hours on National Highway 6. A smaller airport, Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi, is closer at 30km but has limited flights, mostly from Kolkata, and can be affected by weather.
The nearest major railway station is also in Guwahati, about 100km away. From Guwahati, you can hire a taxi or take a shared Sumo to reach Shillong.
Best time to visit.
For the clearest views of the Khasi Hills, the best time to visit is from October through April. The skies are generally clear and the weather is pleasant. The monsoon arrives in June and lasts until September. This is when Meghalaya receives its famous rains, and the landscape turns a deep green. While Shillong itself remains accessible, some outlying sights may close, and you should be prepared for wet weather.
