Manali sits at the head of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh, on the Beas river, and is the base most travellers use for the Solang Valley, Rohtang/Atal Tunnel, and onward trips into Spiti and Ladakh. It's also one of the most crowded hill towns in North India in peak season, which makes where exactly you stay matter more here than almost anywhere else on Fursat.

What makes a good Manali homestay

The single biggest split in Manali is Old Manali versus the Mall Road side. Old Manali, across the river, is quieter, café-heavy, and popular with longer-stay travellers; the Mall Road side is more convenient for taxis and shops but far busier and noisier, especially May-July and around Christmas-New Year.

The second thing worth checking is heating. Manali's winters (December-February) are genuinely cold, and older wood-and-stone homestays vary widely in how well they hold heat compared with newer concrete builds.

Best areas to stay in Manali

Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream, is the quieter, more atmospheric side, popular with backpackers and longer-stay guests, walkable to Vashisht's hot springs.

Vashisht is known for its hot water springs and has a good spread of homestays a short walk from the springs themselves.

Mall Road and Model Town are most central and convenient for taxis, shops, and restaurants, at the cost of noise and traffic, especially in peak season.

Naggar, roughly 20km down-valley, is a genuinely quiet alternative with the Naggar Castle and a slower pace, good if you don't need to be in central Manali every day.

Manali homestay pricing in 2026

May-July and the Christmas-New Year window are Manali's tightest and most expensive weeks; book well ahead if travelling then. October-November and February-March are calmer and often better value.

Best time to visit Manali

March to June brings mild days and the Rohtang/Atal Tunnel road opening for the season, the best window for Solang Valley and onward Spiti/Ladakh trips.

July to September (monsoon) is greener but carries landslide risk on the Kullu-Manali highway. December to February is cold, often snowy, good for snow activities in Solang and Manali itself, but check your homestay actually has heating rather than just extra blankets.

Solang Valley (roughly 30 min) for paragliding, zorbing, and (in winter) skiing.

Vashisht hot springs, a short walk or drive from Old Manali.

Hadimba Temple, a centuries-old cedar-wood temple in a deodar forest, inside Manali itself.

Naggar Castle (roughly 45 min) for Himalayan-style wooden architecture and valley views.

Onward trips: Kasol and the Parvati Valley (2-2.5h), Spiti Valley via Rohtang/Atal Tunnel (a full-day drive, seasonal road), Kaza (further still, best split over two days).
