Naggar is a quiet town with a deep history. The 16th-century Naggar Castle, a formidable structure of stone and wood, is now a heritage hotel and a short walk away. Nearby is the Roerich Estate & Art Gallery, the former home of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich, which holds his paintings and archives of his Himalayan expeditions. Also within walking distance is the Tripura Sundari Temple, a classic example of pagoda-style hill architecture.
A short 6km drive takes you to Jagatsukh village, the ancient capital of Kullu, with its 8th-century Shiva and Sandhya Devi temples. For a quiet walk, the Rumsu trail leads from Naggar up through a dense pine forest to the traditional village of Rumsu. For adventure sports, Solang valley is 35km away via Manali, known for paragliding in the summer and as a snow point in winter.
By air - The nearest airport is in Bhuntar (KUU), 22km south of Naggar. It has limited connectivity. The more reliable option is Chandigarh (IXC), 285km away, which is about an 8-hour drive into the valley.
By rail - The nearest major railhead is Pathankot (PTK), 245km away. The drive from Pathankot to Naggar takes around 7 hours.
By road - Naggar is on the scenic left-bank road between Kullu (22km south) and Manali (22km north). This road is quieter than the main highway on the right bank. The turn-off to the Parvati valley and Manikaran is 28km away at Bhuntar.
The best seasons to visit the Kullu Valley are spring and summer (March to June) and autumn (September to November). The weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the mountain views are sharp. The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rain, and the road to Manali can experience landslides. Winter is cold, with occasional snowfall, but the road to Naggar generally remains open.
