Manali is the hub of the Kullu valley, a starting point for high-altitude passes and a destination in its own right. A short drive takes you to the Solang valley for its summer meadows and winter skiing. From there, the Atal Tunnel, an engineering feat at over 10,000 feet, provides year-round access to the Lahaul valley.
Closer to the home are the essentials. The Hadimba Devi temple, a 16th-century wooden pagoda in a deodar forest, is a quiet, powerful place. A little further, you can explore the cafes of Old Manali or take a dip in the Vashisht hot springs.
For a serious road trip, Manali is the gateway to the Spiti valley loop. This high-desert circuit, open only from June to October via this route, takes you through some of the world's highest villages, including Kaza, Ki monastery, and Kibber.
By air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar (KUU) in Kullu, about 50km away. It has limited flights, and weather can cause cancellations. The most reliable all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC), a 300km drive through the plains and hills.
By rail: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh. From there, it's a bus or taxi ride to Manali. Pathankot is another option, particularly if you are coming from the west.
By road: Manali is a major road hub on NH-3. Regular buses, both government-run and private, connect it to Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla.
The best seasons are spring to summer (March-June) when the snow melts and the valleys are green, and autumn (September-November) for crisp, clear skies and post-monsoon freshness.
The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and landslides on the national highways. Winter (December-February) sees heavy snowfall, which can be beautiful but may restrict travel. Paragliding season in the wider region peaks in October and November.
