Step onto the wooden deck at first light and look east across the valley. The air in Sohra carries mist before the sun breaks through, turning the grass damp and bringing the smell of rain straight through the open doorway. The home is built as a wooden cabin with an A-frame roof, featuring a main room and a raised loft reached by wooden steps. Inside, the timber walls frame a double bed, simple wooden seating, and a quiet corner to sit with tea. High above the valley floor, the top space catches the cool hill breeze, while the lower level holds a compact private bathroom fitted with continuous hot water. The host provides a room heater during cold winter nights, and outside in the garden area sits a fire pit for evening gatherings under the stars. Guests looking out from the porch can watch light change across the opposite ridge throughout the day. As one guest noted, "You will be standing in the edge of the hill with an amazing view of the opposite hills facing east and the valley in the far horizon." Nohkalikai Falls sits a short drive away, dropping 340 meters over dark cliffs into a blue pool. Visit early in the morning before heavy cloud cover rolls across the gorge.

Mawsmai Cave and Krem Phyllut offer limestone cave walks nearby. Bring shoes with firm grip and a small torch to explore the narrow stone passages.

The Nongriat double-decker living root bridge requires a steep 3,500-step descent into the valley floor. Plan a full day trip, wear sturdy shoes, and carry drinking water.

Mawlynnong village and the Riwai root bridge sky walk sit further east toward the border, ideal for a morning drive through bamboo groves and quiet Khasi homesteads.

The Umngot River at Dawki lies down along the Bangladesh border, famous for clear water between January and March where wooden boats appear to float above the riverbed.

Guwahati Airport (GAU) is the primary flight entry point, located 100 km from Shillong. The drive from Guwahati up to Shillong takes roughly 3 hours along the main highway.

Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi sits 30 km from Shillong, offering limited regional flights connecting through Kolkata.

Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest major train terminal, positioned 100 km away, as Meghalaya currently has no rail line.

From Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53 km south along a 2-hour winding mountain road. The home sits a 7-minute walk off the main road, and the local market is a 10-minute drive away.

Best time to visit.

October through April brings dry, clear weather with crisp mountain air, ideal for trekking, cave visits, and valley views. Nights get cold between December and February, requiring warm layers and room heating.

June through September marks the heavy monsoon season when Sohra receives over 10,000 mm of rain. While certain waterfalls and deep caves shut for safety, the surrounding hills turn green and heavy clouds roll straight through the valley.
