Things to do nearby.
The home is a good point from which to explore East and West Sikkim. Gangtok, the state capital, is the hub for permits and transport. From there, you can arrange a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, about 40km away. The lake is often frozen in winter and sits at a high altitude, so acclimatise well. A permit is required. Also near Gangtok is Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim and the seat of the Karmapa Lama.
Further afield in West Sikkim is Pelling, known for its direct, close-up views of Kanchenjunga. The town is home to historic monasteries like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, which you can walk between. For serious trekkers, the Goecha La trek to the Kanchenjunga base camp starts from Yuksom, a drive from Pelling.
For a trip into North Sikkim to see the Yumthang Valley, known as the valley of flowers, you will need a separate permit arranged in advance through a travel agent in Gangtok.
Getting there.
By air: The closest airport is Pakyong (PYG), about 30km from Gangtok, but its operations are weather-dependent. The more reliable option is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, 124km away. From Bagdogra, it's a 4 to 5-hour drive into Sikkim.
By rail: The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, roughly 122km away. Taxis and shared jeeps are available at the station for the drive up to Sikkim.
By road: The home is accessible by road. The final connecting road to the property is steep and can be difficult for self-driven cars. The property provides a complimentary chauffeur service to and from the main road for guests who need it.
Best time to visit.
For clear mountain views, the best time to visit is from October to mid-December. The skies are crisp and blue, and the entire Kanchenjunga range is visible most days.
Another beautiful season is from March to May, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the state, adding colour to the hillsides. The summer months bring the monsoon, which can cause landslides and road closures, especially in North Sikkim.
