The first thing you notice is the mountain. The whole property is oriented towards the Kanchenjunga range, with an unhindered view that feels, as one guest put it, "almost unreal". The day starts with the sun hitting the peaks, a view you can watch from your bed. One guest remembers "waking up to the golden hues on the white-capped peaks was a magical experience." The home is a collection of rooms spread across a large, quiet piece of land. There are ten bedrooms in total, each with its own attached bathroom, sleeping up to twenty guests. The rooms are simple and warm, with wood-panelled walls and large windows that frame the mountains. Beds are low platform style, and the bathrooms are equipped with hot water showers. There is a separate dining hall where Kzang and the team serve meals. The food is simple, fresh, and not overpriced - a welcome detail in a remote spot. The grounds are spacious enough to walk around in, and for birdwatchers, it's a good place to be. A past guest noted, "For birdwatchers, the property will get good opportunity to capture some of the himalayan birds like Green-tailed Sunbird, Rufous Sibia, Blue-fronted Redstart, Yuhina, Sikkim Treecreeper and many more." The owner, Debanjan Mitra, is responsive, and the staff are known for their warmth. Ravangla is a good starting point for exploring South and West Sikkim. Pelling is about 115 km away, known for its historic monasteries like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, and its own clear views of Kanchenjunga.

From Gangtok, the state capital, you can arrange trips to other parts of Sikkim. Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, is a significant spiritual centre located 24 km from Gangtok. A day trip to Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu Lake), 40 km from Gangtok, is popular. The lake is often frozen in winter. Note that a permit is required for this visit.

For serious trekkers, the Goecha La trek starts from Yuksom in West Sikkim. This is the classic route to the base of Kanchenjunga and requires proper planning and a registered guide.

Getting there.

The most reliable airport for reaching Sikkim is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is 124 km from Ravangla. The drive from the airport takes about four to five hours, depending on road conditions.

The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, located 122 km away. From NJP, you can hire a taxi for the drive up to Ravangla.

Pakyong Airport (PYG) is technically closer, about 30 km from Gangtok, but flights here are often diverted to Bagdogra due to unpredictable weather. It's best to fly into Bagdogra for a more certain arrival.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best times for clear mountain views are from October to mid-December. The skies are crisp and blue after the monsoon, offering the sharpest views of the Himalayan range.

March to May is another good window. This is when the rhododendrons are in bloom across Sikkim, adding colour to the landscape. The weather is pleasant for walking and sightseeing. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and often causes landslides, which can shut down roads for days.
