Things to do nearby.
Ravangla is a good point from which to explore parts of East and West Sikkim. A day trip to Pelling, about 115 km away, takes you to some of the region's oldest monasteries, like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, with their own views of the Kanchenjunga range.
The state capital, Gangtok, is where you arrange permits for restricted areas. From there, you can visit the Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, which is 24 km from the city. A longer day trip from Gangtok takes you to the high-altitude Tsomgo Lake, often frozen in winter. Note that this requires a permit.
For serious trekkers, Yuksom is the starting point for the Goecha La trek, a classic route that goes to the base of Kanchenjunga. This is a multi-day trek that requires planning and a registered guide.
Getting there.
The most reliable way to arrive is by air to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is about 124 km away. From the airport, it is a 4 to 5-hour drive to Ravangla. While Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), closer to Gangtok, its operations are often affected by weather, with flights frequently diverted to Bagdogra.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 122 km away. From NJP, you can hire a taxi for the drive up to Ravangla.
Best time to visit.
The clearest skies are from October to mid-December, when the mountain views are sharp and unobstructed. The weather is cold but pleasant. Spring, from March to May, is another good time to visit, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the hillsides.
The monsoon months, from June to September, see heavy rainfall which can cause landslides and road closures, especially in North Sikkim. It is best to avoid this season for travel.
