Things to do nearby.
Ravangla is a good point from which to explore South and West Sikkim.
Pelling, known for its direct views of Kanchenjunga, is about a 2-hour drive away. It's home to some of Sikkim's oldest and most significant monasteries, including Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling. A day trip is easily managed from the home.
Gangtok, the state capital, is a few hours' drive and the hub for arranging permits for restricted areas. From here, you can organize trips to Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, a high-altitude lake that freezes over in winter, or further into North Sikkim to see the Yumthang Valley.
Closer to Gangtok is the Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa Lama and a vast, active monastic complex. It's a place of deep spiritual significance and impressive Tibetan Buddhist architecture.
For serious trekkers, Yuksom is the starting point for the Goecha La trek, which takes you to the base of Kanchenjunga. This is a multi-day, high-altitude trek that requires significant planning and fitness.
Getting there.
The most reliable airport for reaching Sikkim is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about 124 km away. From the airport, it's a 4 to 5-hour drive to Ravangla by hired taxi. Pakyong Airport (PYG) is much closer, just outside Gangtok, but its operations are often disrupted by weather.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located near Siliguri. It is well-connected to major Indian cities. The distance to Ravangla is about 122 km, and the road journey takes a similar amount of time as from Bagdogra.
Shared and private taxis are available from all entry points. It's best to book a vehicle in advance, especially during peak season.
Best time to visit.
The best times to visit are in the spring, from March to May, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the hillsides. The weather is pleasant and the landscape is vibrant with colour.
The other ideal window is autumn, from October to mid-December. The monsoon has passed, leaving the skies clear and crisp, offering the best mountain views. This is the peak season for photography and sightseeing. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides, which can shut down roads without warning.
