Tsomgo Lake sits roughly 40km from Gangtok along the high road. The altitude brings freezing temperatures in winter, turning the water to solid ice across the valley floor. Visitors must secure a Restricted Area Permit in advance through travel desks in Gangtok before heading up the winding switchbacks.
Rumtek Monastery rests 24km from Gangtok, serving as the main seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim. The complex features traditional Tibetan monastic architecture, sacred murals, and sweeping viewpoints across the valley opposite the capital city.
Yumthang Valley offers vast alpine pastures framed by pine forests and snow peaks further north. Known for seasonal rhododendron blooms, access requires a dedicated North Sikkim permit and an overnight road trip through mountain passes.
Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling Monasteries sit near Pelling, roughly 115km away in West Sikkim. Pemayangtse is one of the oldest monasteries in the state, housing intricate wooden sculptures, while Sanga Choeling requires a short uphill walk through forested trail ridges.

Getting there.
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the primary air entry point, located 124km away. The drive up into the Sikkim hills takes approximately 4 hours by mountain taxi or private car along the Teesta river highway.
Pakyong Airport (PYG) sits 30km from Gangtok. While significantly closer than Bagdogra, flights are limited and weather-dependent, with frequent cloud cover causing flight diversions back to Bagdogra.
New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) serves as the main rail hub, located 122km from the area. Taxis and shared vehicles line up outside the station daily for journeys upward into eastern and southern Sikkim.
Gangtok serves as the central road transit hub for the entire state. All travel permits for restricted border areas, including the Silk Route circuit and North Sikkim routes, must be processed through official desks based in the capital city.
Best time to visit.
March through May brings mild weather and blooming rhododendrons across the mid-altitude valleys. Morning skies are generally clear, though light afternoon clouds often drift up from the lower river valleys.
October to mid-December offers the clearest mountain views of the year. Sharp, crisp air follows the end of the monsoon season, providing unobstructed vistas across the high ridges. Winter temperatures drop significantly by late December, bringing heavy frost and potential road icing along upper passes.
The monsoon months from July to September bring heavy rain to the Eastern Himalayas. Mountain roads frequently experience mudslides, rockfalls, and sudden transport delays.
