A look around
What's here
The first thing you see from the balcony is the Kanchenjunga range, clear on an autumn morning. This home is in Ghumpha Dara, a quieter part of Aritar, set against a backdrop of green hills. The building has 14 private bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom. The rooms are spacious and simply furnished, with large windows that look out onto the valley. The beds are king-sized. Outside, there is a space with a fire pit for evenings. The owner, Tashi, lives on the property with his family. They manage the home and the kitchen, and as one guest, Milon, noted, they make sure you are "well taken care of even if it's just for a night." The food is simple and Sikkimese, prepared in the family kitchen. Guests often mention the personal attention. "The most important thing is that, the owner with his family will take care of every guest," a recent visitor wrote. The location is the main draw, described by a guest as "very scenic amidst the bountiful nature."

“I had been to this retreat in last week of May, 2025. The location is very scenic amidst the bountiful nature. The Aritar Monastry situated in a stone throwing distance is an added attraction. The home stay is very aesthetically decorated, rooms are spacious and neat & clean. It would have been better had there been provision for some family rooms (3 or 4 b...”

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

The home is a good starting point for exploring East Sikkim. The Aritar Monastery is a short walk away, what one guest called a "stone throwing distance."

For a day trip, you can drive towards Gangtok to visit Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, which is about 24km from the capital. Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is another popular destination about 40km from Gangtok. The lake often freezes over in the winter. Note that a special permit is required to visit Tsomgo Lake.

Logistics

Getting there.

The most reliable way to reach Sikkim is by air to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is about 124km from Aritar. From the airport, it is a 4 to 5-hour drive by taxi. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), at a similar distance. While Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), flights are often diverted due to weather conditions.

The state capital, Gangtok, is the main hub for arranging transport and the necessary permits for restricted areas.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

For clear skies and the best mountain views, plan your visit between October and mid-December. The spring months, from March to May, are when the region’s famous rhododendrons are in full bloom. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain, and roads in North Sikkim are often closed due to landslides.
