Things to do nearby.
Lingtam is a quiet village, a place to pause on the Silk Route. For those looking to explore, it serves as a base for parts of East Sikkim.
Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim and the seat of the Karmapa Lama, is about a 2-3 hour drive away, near Gangtok. It's a vast complex with intricate murals and a palpable sense of peace.
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a glacial lake located about 40km from Gangtok. It’s a popular day trip, frozen solid in the winter months. A special permit is required to visit, which can be arranged through travel agents in Gangtok.
For wider Sikkim exploration, Pelling in West Sikkim is known for its views of Kanchenjunga and its historic monasteries, Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling. The famous Yumthang Valley, the ‘valley of flowers’, is in North Sikkim and also requires a permit. These are not day trips from Lingtam but are often part of a larger Sikkim itinerary.
Getting there.
The most reliable airport for reaching Sikkim is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is 124 km away. From there, it is a 4 to 5-hour drive to Lingtam. The newer Pakyong Airport (PYG) is closer, but flights are often diverted due to weather.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 122 km away. Taxis and shared vehicles are available from both the airport and the station for the journey into Sikkim.
Best time to visit.
Sikkim has two main tourist seasons. March through May is spring, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the hillsides, and the weather is pleasant.
The second window is from October to mid-December. This is post-monsoon, when the skies are generally clear, offering the best mountain views. The winter is cold, but the light is sharp. The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rain, and road closures due to landslides are common.
