Things to do nearby.
The home is in West Sikkim, a good point to explore this part of the state. Pelling is about 115 km away, known for its historic monasteries like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, which offer some of the most-photographed views of Kanchenjunga. For serious trekkers, the town of Yuksom is the starting point for the Goecha La trek, a classic route that takes you to the base of the great mountain.
If you plan a longer trip, you can travel towards Gangtok, the state capital, to arrange permits for other parts of Sikkim. From Gangtok, you can visit Rumtek Monastery (24 km), the seat of the Karmapa, or take a day trip to the high-altitude Tsomgo Lake (40 km), which often freezes in winter. A trip to North Sikkim to see Yumthang, the valley of flowers, also requires a permit arranged in Gangtok.
Getting there.
The most reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, which is about a 4-hour drive (124 km) away. Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), closer to Gangtok, but flights are often diverted to Bagdogra due to weather. The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, at a distance of 122 km. From either the airport or the station, you will need to hire a car for the journey into West Sikkim.
Best time to visit.
Sikkim has two main seasons for visitors. March through May is when the rhododendrons and other wildflowers are in bloom across the state, and the weather is pleasant. The second window is from October to mid-December, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear and offer the best mountain views. The monsoon months, from June to September, see heavy rain and frequent landslides that can shut down roads.
