This home is a good starting point for exploring South and West Sikkim. Gangtok, the state capital, is the hub for permits and further travel.
From Gangtok, you can arrange a trip to Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, which sits at a high altitude and often freezes over in winter. It’s about 40km away and requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, is a significant spiritual centre just 24km from Gangtok. It's an essential visit for understanding the region's Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
Further afield, North Sikkim's Yumthang Valley, the 'valley of flowers', is a spectacular sight, especially during rhododendron season. Access is strictly controlled and requires a permit arranged in Gangtok.
In West Sikkim, the town of Pelling (115km from Gangtok) offers clear views of Kanchenjunga. Visit the historic Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling monasteries for a sense of deep-rooted history and peace. For serious trekkers, Yuksom is the starting point for the Goecha La trek, the classic route to the Kanchenjunga base camp.
The nearest reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, 124km away. The drive to Gangtok takes about four hours. Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), only 30km from Gangtok, but flights are often diverted to Bagdogra due to weather.
The closest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, at a distance of 122km. From NJP, you will need to continue by road.
Gangtok is the main road hub for all of Sikkim. From here you can arrange transport and the necessary permits for restricted areas. Pelling and Lachung are other key towns for accessing West and North Sikkim respectively.
Sikkim has two main tourist seasons. March to May is when the rhododendrons are in full bloom, covering the hillsides in colour. This is also a great time for birdwatching. The second window is from October to mid-December, when the monsoon has passed, leaving clear blue skies and sharp views of the Himalayan peaks. The monsoon season shuts down many roads, especially in North Sikkim.
