Yuksom is the historic first capital of Sikkim and the starting point for the famous Goecha La trek. This multi-day trek takes you towards the base of Kanchenjunga, offering some of the closest possible views of the peak. Plan for a guided expedition, which can be arranged locally.

A drive of about 115 km takes you to Pelling in West Sikkim. It's known for its clear, direct views of the Kanchenjunga range and is home to important monasteries like Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling.

The state capital, Gangtok, is a few hours' drive away. It's the hub for arranging permits for restricted areas like Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim. You can also visit Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, located 24 km from the city.

The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about 124 km away. The drive to Yuksom takes over four hours. Sikkim's own airport at Pakyong (PYG) is closer but has weather-dependent operations and flights often divert to Bagdogra.

The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), near Siliguri. It is about 122 km from Yuksom, and you will need to hire a car for the final leg of the journey.

Yuksom is connected by road to major towns in Sikkim like Pelling and Gangtok. Roads in the mountains can be unpredictable, especially during monsoon.

The best times to visit Yuksom are from March to May and from October to mid-December. Spring, from March to May, is when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the state. The autumn months, October to December, offer clear skies and the best mountain views. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and can cause road closures due to landslides.
