A look around
What's here
You find it down a little track, 150 metres downhill from the main street, behind a set of small wooden shops. Head for the prayer flags. The home is a low, single-story building covered in ivy, with a small garden out front where guests and the hosts' friendly dog, Snoopy, gather. Inside, there are three bedrooms with five beds in total, sleeping up to seven guests. The rooms are cozy and clean, with good mattresses and modern, attached bathrooms. This is Dowa and Purna's home, and they treat guests like family, sharing stories and experiences. The food is simple and homely, often made with organic vegetables and greens they grow themselves. Evenings usually end around a bonfire in the garden. As guests have said, "Dada and Didi are really amazing hosts who make very homely food." Another found it to be a place with "Spacious rooms, good mattress and modern bathroom." For many, it’s simply "a good place to rest before and after a trek."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Yuksom is the historical first capital of Sikkim and the starting point for one of the region's most famous treks. The Goecha La trek, a challenging multi-day route to the base of Kanchenjunga, begins here. This home is a common stop for trekkers to acclimatize before setting off or recover after they return.

Pelling is about a two-hour drive away, known for its direct views of the Kanchenjunga range. It is home to two important monasteries, Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling, which are quiet places for a morning visit.

For a longer day trip, you can drive towards Gangtok, the state capital. From there, you can arrange permits for Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake that often freezes over in winter. Nearby is the Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim and the seat of the Karmapa Lama.

Logistics

Getting there.

The most reliable airport for reaching Sikkim is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, which is 124 km from Yuksom. The drive from the airport takes about 4 to 5 hours through winding mountain roads. Sikkim's own airport at Pakyong (PYG) is closer but flights are often diverted due to weather.

The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, located 122 km away. From NJP, you will need to hire a car or take a shared taxi for the road journey to Yuksom.

Shared and private taxis are available from major towns like Gangtok, Pelling, and Siliguri.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best times to visit Yuksom are during the two main clear seasons. March to May is spring, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the state, adding colour to the hillsides. The weather is pleasant for trekking and sightseeing.

The second window is from October to mid-December. This is post-monsoon, when the skies are typically clear, offering the best views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The air is crisp and cool. The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rain which can cause landslides and road closures.
