Things to do nearby.
Yuksom is the historic first capital of Sikkim and the gateway to the Kanchenjunga National Park. The main draw is trekking. The Goecha La trek, a classic route to the base of Kanchenjunga, starts right from the village. The hosts can help arrange guides and porters for this multi-day adventure.
For shorter day trips, the town of Pelling is about a 2-hour drive away. It is home to some of West Sikkim's most important monasteries, including the 17th-century Pemayangtse Monastery and the hilltop Sanga Choeling Monastery, which offers wide views of the mountains.
From Gangtok, the state capital, you can arrange permits for visits to Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake that often freezes in winter, and Rumtek Monastery, the largest monastery in Sikkim and the seat of the Karmapa Lama.
Getting there.
The most reliable way to reach Yuksom is by road. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, approximately 124 km away. The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 122 km away. From either IXB or NJP, it is a 4 to 5-hour drive by taxi to Yuksom. The journey is scenic, climbing through the hills of Sikkim.
Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), near Gangtok, but flights are often subject to weather-related cancellations and diversions to Bagdogra.
Best time to visit.
The best time for clear skies and mountain views is from October to mid-December. This is the ideal season for trekking. Another popular window is from March to May when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the hillsides, adding colour to the landscape.
The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain, which can cause landslides and road closures. Travel during this period, especially to remote areas like Yuksom, can be unpredictable.
