Key Monastery is the largest in Spiti and over a thousand years old. It’s perched on a cliffside, about a 45-minute drive away. Try to visit during morning prayers for the full experience.
Kibber village, at 4,270 metres, is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. It's a short drive from Key Monastery and gives you a real sense of high-altitude life.
Chicham Bridge is Asia's highest suspension bridge, connecting the villages of Chicham and Kibber. The view down into the gorge is dizzying. It's an essential stop for photos.
Pin Valley National Park is known for its wildlife, especially the elusive snow leopard and the Siberian ibex. The landscape is starkly different from the main Spiti valley - greener in the summer. It requires a separate trip and is best explored with a local guide.
Langza village sits about 1,000 feet above Kaza and is famous for its giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley. It's also known as the fossil village; you can often find small, ancient marine fossils in the surrounding hills.
By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar (KUU) near Kullu-Manali, about 220 km away, and Shimla (SLV), about 410 km away. The road from Bhuntar crosses the high Kunzum Pass and is only open from June to October.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Shimla (410 km), which is connected to Kalka by the historic toy train. From Shimla, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the long road journey.
By Road: There are two main routes. The road from Manali (200 km) via the Kunzum and Rohtang passes is shorter but only open from June to October. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly preferred for this route. The longer route from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur is open for more of the year (typically April to November) and allows for better acclimatization. Kaza is the district headquarters and has the only fuel pumps and ATMs in the immediate area.
The best time to visit by road is from May to October, when the roads from both Manali and Shimla are open and the weather is pleasant. This is the summer season in Spiti, with green patches in the valleys and clear blue skies. From November to April, the road from Manali is closed due to heavy snow on the passes. The valley is still accessible from the Shimla side, offering a stark, white, winter landscape, but this journey is for the more adventurous.
