The first thing you notice is the view. From the terrace, prayer flags flutter against a backdrop of the high, cold desert mountains of Spiti. This is a large home, built to welcome travellers exploring the valley, with 17 private bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom. The home can accommodate up to 34 guests in total. The rooms are simple and clean, designed to let the landscape in. Large windows frame the mountains, and the beds are king-sized with warm blankets for the cold Spiti nights. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and a fireplace for gathering on colder evenings. The host, Kedarta, who everyone calls Lucky Bhai, is the heart of the home. Things to do nearby.

The home is a good point from which to explore the main sights of Spiti.

Key Monastery is one of the most iconic sights in the valley. It's the largest monastery in Spiti, over a thousand years old, and sits dramatically on a conical hill overlooking the Spiti River. It's a short drive from Kaza.

Kibber village, at 4,270 metres, is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. The drive itself is beautiful, and from here you can access the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Chicham Bridge is an engineering sight, a suspension bridge hanging over a deep gorge. It connects Kibber to the village of Chicham and is said to be Asia's highest.

Pin Valley National Park is known for its stark, colourful landscapes and as a habitat for the elusive snow leopard and the Siberian ibex. The landscape here is different from the main Spiti valley, often greener in the summer.

Langza is famous for its giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley and for the prehistoric marine fossils that can be found in the surrounding hills. It sits about 1,000 feet above Kaza.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 220 km away via the Kunzum Pass, and Shimla Airport (SLV), about 410 km away. The road from Bhuntar is only open from June to October.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Shimla (410 km), which is connected to Kalka by the historic toy train. From Shimla, you will need to travel by road.

By Road: There are two main road routes to Kaza. The route from Manali (200 km) via the Kunzum Pass is shorter but only open from June to October. A 4x4 vehicle is for this stretch. The route from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur is longer but stays open for more months of the year, typically from April to November. Kaza is the main town in Spiti and has fuel stations, ATMs, and a market.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The main season for road travel is from May to October, when the passes from the Manali side are open and the weather is pleasant. This is the best time to complete the full Spiti circuit. The road from Shimla via Kinnaur is open for longer, from around April to November, allowing access to Spiti when the Kunzum Pass is closed. Winters (November to April) are harsh and cold, with heavy snowfall closing the Manali-Kaza highway completely. The valley is accessible only from the Shimla side during these months, and only for experienced winter travellers.
