The home is a quiet base in the Chamba region, a bit removed from the main tourist circuits. For those looking for day trips, some of Himachal's key sights are a scenic, winding drive away.
A drive of a few hours brings you to Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the heart of Tibetan-Buddhist culture in India. Here you can visit the Tsuglagkhang complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama. For active travelers, the four-hour Triund trek starts from McLeodganj, offering a steep but rewarding walk up to a ridge with a direct view of the Dhauladhar mountain wall.
Further on is Bir-Billing, known as the world's second-highest paragliding takeoff point. The peak season for flying is from October to November, when the skies are clear and the thermals are strong. Landings happen in the village of Billing below.
The journey is part of the experience in Himachal. The roads are winding, and the views change with every turn.
By Air: The nearest airport in the hills is Gaggal Airport (DHM) in Dharamshala. For more reliable, all-weather connectivity, the best option is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) in the plains, from where you can hire a taxi for the drive up.
By Rail: The closest major railhead is Pathankot, which serves as the gateway to this part of Himachal. From Pathankot, taxis are readily available. Chandigarh is the other major rail hub connecting the region to the rest of the country.
By Road: Banikhet is well-connected by road from Pathankot, Dalhousie, and Chamba. Remember the mountain rule of thumb: a 100km journey will likely take 4-6 hours.
The best seasons to visit are from March to June, when the snow melts and summer arrives, and again from September to November, for crisp air and clear post-monsoon skies. The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rains and landslides on National Highways 3 and 21, making travel unpredictable. From December to February, the upper reaches of Himachal see heavy snowfall.
