The home is a good point from which to explore the core of Spiti.
Key Monastery is the largest in the valley, a thousand-year-old complex clinging to a conical hill. It’s about a 45-minute drive. Try to visit in the morning to hear the monks chanting during their prayers.
Kibber village sits at an altitude of 4,270 metres, making it one of the highest motorable villages in the world. It’s a short drive away and offers a glimpse into traditional Spitian life.
Chicham Bridge, Asia's highest suspension bridge, connects the villages of Chicham and Kibber. The view down into the gorge is dizzying. You can walk across it.
Pin Valley National Park is a high-altitude park, home to the elusive snow leopard and the Siberian ibex. Accessing the park requires permits and a capable 4x4 vehicle, especially if you plan to trek.
Langza is famous for its towering Buddha statue overlooking the valley and its abundance of marine fossils, remnants of a time when the Himalayas were under the Tethys Sea. It's a short but steep drive up from Kaza.
Spiti is remote, and the journey is a significant part of the experience.
By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar (KUU) near Manali, about 220 km away, and Shimla (SLV), about 410 km away. The road from Manali is only open from June to October.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can take the narrow-gauge toy train to Shimla (410 km from the property), a scenic journey in itself, followed by a two-day drive.
By Road: There are two primary routes. The route from Manali (200 km) crosses the high passes of Rohtang and Kunzum La and is only open from June to October. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. The longer route from Shimla (410 km) via Kinnaur is open for more of the year (typically April to November) and allows for better acclimatization. The district headquarters, Kaza, has the region's main market, ATMs, and fuel stations.
The best season to visit depends on the experience you seek. May to October is peak season, when the road from Manali is open, granting access to the full Spiti circuit. The weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the landscape is accessible.
From November to April, the Manali road closes due to heavy snowfall. Spiti is only reachable from the Shimla side. This is the time for a starker, quieter experience. The valley is covered in a thick blanket of snow, temperatures drop far below freezing, and life moves at a slower pace.
