We stayed at this place for 2 nights. The rooms are neat, clean though relatively small in size compared to other homestays we stayed. Food both breakfast and Dinner was good. The staff especially the front office manager was very helpful. Overall decent service and a nice stay.

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

The home is a good starting point for exploring the Khasi Hills. The famous living root bridges of Nongriat are a drive and a steep trek away, involving a descent of about 3,500 steps into the valley. It's a full-day trip, so start early.

Closer to Cherrapunji are the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, which offer a glimpse into the region's limestone formations. Some sections are lit, making them accessible to most visitors.

India's tallest plunge waterfall, Nohkalikai Falls, is also nearby. The viewpoint offers a wide perspective of the 340-metre drop, especially clear after the monsoon.

For a longer day trip, you can drive to the border town of Dawki. The Umngot river here is known for its clear water, especially from January to March, when you can see the riverbed from your boat. On the way, you can stop at Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, and walk on the Riwai sky walk for views over the plains of Bangladesh.

Logistics

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. From Guwahati, it's a 3-hour drive to Shillong, and another 2 hours to Cherrapunji. A smaller airport at Umroi near Shillong (SHL) has limited flights, mainly from Kolkata.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati. There is no rail connectivity in Meghalaya, so you will need to hire a car or take a shared taxi from the station for the rest of the journey.

By Road: Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is 53km from Shillong, the state capital. The drive takes about two hours on a winding, scenic road. Shillong is the main hub for accessing all major sights in the Khasi Hills.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit is from October to April, when the skies are generally clear and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal season for trekking and sightseeing.

The monsoon season, from June to September, is an experience in itself. Cherrapunji receives some of the highest rainfall in the world, and the landscape turns a deep, lush green. Waterfalls are at their most powerful. However, heavy rain can cause travel delays, and some caves and trekking routes may be closed.
