Kalimpong gets written about as Darjeeling's quieter sibling, the hill station without the toy train and the tour buses. That's roughly true, but it undersells what the area actually offers: a ridge of small villages east and north of the town, at the edge of Neora Valley National Park, where the Kanchenjunga massif fills the horizon on a clear morning and the loudest thing at night is a dog two farms away. That ridge is where Fursat's Kalimpong catalog actually lives.

We currently carry five homestays here, and none of them are in Kalimpong town itself. They sit in three villages on the same circuit: Lava, Kolakham, and Icha Forest, the last of which sits in the border belt between Kalimpong and Darjeeling and gets claimed by both. It's a small, real catalog. If you want a hotel on Kalimpong's main road, we'd rather tell you plainly that we don't have one than dress up five village homestays as town-wide coverage. Lava, Kolakham, and Icha Forest: the villages behind the listings

Kalimpong town itself sits at about 4,000 ft, a former trade post on the old wool route between Tibet and Calcutta, known today for its colonial-era schools, its cactus and orchid nurseries, and the Durpin monastery lookout. It's worth a day. But the stays in this catalog are in the hills beyond it.

Lava, roughly 34 km east of town at around 7,000 ft, is built around the Kagyu Thekchen Ling monastery and is the main gateway into Neora Valley National Park. It's noticeably colder than Kalimpong, often sitting inside cloud, with pine and fir forest instead of the town's cultivated slopes. Kolakham is a scatter of houses below Lava on a steep forest road, popular with birders and with anyone chasing an unobstructed Kanchenjunga sunrise; the Changey waterfall is a short walk away. Icha Forest lies in the ridgeline country between Kalimpong and Darjeeling districts, which is why one of our listings there calls itself a Darjeeling homestay: the label genuinely depends on which way you drove in.

What a homestay near Kalimpong costs

The five listings span a wide but honest range. At the bottom, the two-guest Icha Forest homestay is ₹4,000/night. The mid-range group stays, Kolakham (sleeps 8) and the Icha Forest waterfall homestay (sleeps 8), run ₹14,000 and ₹20,800/night respectively. The Lava monastery homestay sleeps 15 at ₹20,000/night, and the big Icha Forest property sleeps 18 at ₹42,000/night.

Four of the five also price per room, at ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 per room per night, so a smaller group doesn't have to take a whole property. Per head, the group stays work out to roughly ₹1,300 to ₹2,600/night at full occupancy, which is the honest way to compare them: these are village homestays with home-cooked food, not resorts, and the price reflects that.

Best time to visit the Kalimpong hills

For the Kanchenjunga views that four of these five listings are named after, come between October and early December, when the post-monsoon air is at its clearest, or March to April, which trades slightly hazier skies for rhododendrons and magnolias in bloom around Lava and Neora Valley. Winter (December to February) is cold at Lava's altitude, occasionally touching frost, but the views hold and the villages are at their quietest.

The monsoon (June to September) is the season to think twice about. The hills turn intensely green and the waterfalls are at full volume, but landslides on the approach roads are routine, leeches are real on forest walks, and the mountain view can disappear for days at a time. Some travellers love it precisely for that; just go in knowing what you're trading.

Things to do from a Lava, Kolakham, or Icha Forest base

Neora Valley National Park is the headline: one of the richest forest tracts in the eastern Himalaya, home to red pandas and clouded leopards you almost certainly won't see and hundreds of bird species you might. Entry is arranged from Lava. From Kolakham, the walk to Changey Falls takes under an hour. The Lava monastery anchors the town our first listing faces, and the forest road between Lava and Kolakham is a birding route in its own right.

Kalimpong town works as a day trip from any of the three villages: the Durpin Dara viewpoint and Zang Dhok Palri monastery, the flower and cactus nurseries the town has been known for since the British era, and Deolo Hill on the other end of the ridge. If you're routing onward, Darjeeling is reachable from the Icha Forest side, and the Sikkim border at the Teesta is under two hours from Kalimpong, which made the town a trade hub long before it was a tourist one.
