A look around
What's here
The home is built in the local hill style, with wood-panelled walls and a long, shared verandah. Your room opens right onto it. The air is cool up here. Inside, the rooms are simple and clean and beds made up with fresh linen. Some rooms have a large king bed, others have twin beds. The heart of the home is outdoors. A small garden path leads to a gazebo, lit with fairy lights after dark. This is where guests gather. The kitchen sends out plates of hot, steaming momos. It’s a place to sit and talk, with the dark hills all around.

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

The sunrise from Tiger Hill is an 11km drive away. On a clear morning, you can see the first light hit the peak of Kanchenjunga. It gets very cold, so carry a warm flask and an extra layer.

Darjeeling is tea country. You can visit working estates like Happy Valley or Glenburn to see how tea is grown and processed, and to taste the different flushes. The drives there are through winding roads lined with tea bushes.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is worth it-do. The two-hour ‘joyride’ loop from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is a slow, scenic journey pulled by a steam engine, offering a feel for the region’s history.

For serious trekkers, this is a base for the Singalila ridge trek. The trail leads to Sandakphu, famous for its view of five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru. This requires a guide and proper gear.

In Darjeeling town, you can visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.

Logistics

Getting there.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km away. The drive up to the Darjeeling area takes around 3 hours, via the scenic roads through Mirik or Kurseong.

The main railway station on the plains is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 88km from Darjeeling. It’s the gateway to the entire region. From NJP or the nearby town of Siliguri, you can hire a private car or take a shared jeep up the hill.

The historic toy train connects NJP to Darjeeling. It’s a slow, beautiful journey that takes most of the day, but it’s an experience in itself.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit is from October to mid-June, when the skies are clear and the views are sharp. Winters are cold but sunny. Spring, from March to May, brings rhododendrons and a pleasant warmth to the air.

The monsoon season runs from late June to September. The hills are lush and green, but heavy rains can cause landslides, sometimes closing the main highways like NH10. Travel during these months requires flexibility.
