The home is a good starting point for exploring both the Darjeeling and Kalimpong sides of the hills.
Tiger Hill Sunrise: A classic Darjeeling experience, about an 11km drive from Darjeeling town. On a clear morning, you can see the first rays of sun hit the Kanchenjunga massif, and even a glimpse of Everest. Plan to leave very early, well before dawn.
Tea Estates: The region is famous for its tea. Visit working gardens like Happy Valley or Glenburn Tea Estate to see the process from leaf to cup. Most offer guided tours and tasting sessions.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: A UNESCO World Heritage site. The ‘toy train’ offers a slow, scenic journey through the hills. The two-hour Ghum loop joyride is a popular option, taking you from Darjeeling to Ghum, India's highest railway station, and back.
Singalila Ridge Trek: For serious trekkers, the trail to Sandakphu on the Singalila ridge offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas. From the highest point, you can see five of the world's tallest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
Padmaja Naidu Zoo & HMI: Located in Darjeeling, this is one of India's best high-altitude zoos, known for its conservation programs for the red panda and snow leopard. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is on the same campus, founded in the memory of Tenzing Norgay.
By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes around 3 hours, via either Mirik or Kurseong.
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. From NJP, you can hire a car or take a shared jeep. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects NJP to Darjeeling, but it's a slow, scenic ride, not a quick transfer.
By Road: Siliguri is the main town in the plains and the gateway to the hills. From here, shared jeeps and private taxis are available for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Lava.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. The skies are generally clear during these months, offering the best mountain views. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, which can cause landslides on the main highways like NH10 and the Pankhabari road, making travel difficult.
