Kaza is the main town in the Spiti Valley and the base for exploring its most famous sights. The home is a good starting point for the Spiti circuit.
A short drive away is the iconic Ki Monastery, a spectacular cliff-side complex of rooms and prayer halls that looks like it grew out of the rock. Further up the road is Kibber, once one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in the world, and the gateway to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
The drive to Kaza itself, especially from Manali, is an experience. It takes you through the 9km-long Atal Tunnel, which bypasses the treacherous Rohtang Pass, and over the high passes of Kunzum La. The landscape is stark, dramatic, and changes with every turn.
The journey to Spiti is a significant part of the experience. The valley is remote and the roads are challenging.
By Air: The nearest major airport is in Bhuntar (KUU), near Kullu-Manali. From Bhuntar, it is an 8-10 hour drive to Kaza (approx. 200km) via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass. This road is only open from June to October. The most reliable all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC), from which you can hire a cab for the two-day drive to Kaza.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can take a bus or hire a taxi to Manali, and then another to Kaza. The Kalka station offers the scenic toy train to Shimla, from where you can begin the longer road journey to Spiti via the Kinnaur valley.
By Road: Manali is the primary gateway to Spiti during the summer months (June-October). The road is spectacular but demanding. The alternative route is from Shimla via Reckong Peo and Kinnaur, which is a longer, two or three-day drive but is open for more months of the year.
The best time to visit Spiti is from June to October, when the road from Manali is open and the weather is pleasant during the day. This is the summer season, with clear skies and accessible roads to all major monasteries and villages.
September and October offer crisp air, deep blue skies, and the beginning of autumn colours. From November to May, heavy snow cuts off the Manali-Kaza road, and the valley is only accessible via the longer route from Shimla. Winter is extremely harsh, with temperatures dropping far below freezing.
