The state capital, Gangtok, is the hub for arranging permits for protected areas. From there, you can visit Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake that often freezes in winter, or the Rumtek Monastery, an important centre for Tibetan Buddhism.
For serious trekkers, Yuksom, the old capital of Sikkim, is the gateway to the Goecha La trek, a challenging route that takes you to the base of Kanchenjunga.

Best time to visit.
The best time to visit for clear mountain views is in autumn and early winter, from October to mid-December. The skies are clear after the monsoon, and the air is crisp.
Spring, from March to May, is another beautiful season, when the region’s famous rhododendrons are in full bloom, covering the hillsides in colour. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides, which can cause road closures.
