Things to do nearby.
From your base in Namchi, you can plan day trips or longer excursions into other parts of Sikkim.
Gangtok, the state capital, is the hub for arranging permits for North Sikkim. From there, you can visit the Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa, which is about 24km from the city. A popular day trip from Gangtok is to Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu Lake), which often freezes over in winter. Note that this requires a special permit.
For views of Kanchenjunga, many travellers head to West Sikkim. Pelling, about a three-hour drive from Namchi, is home to the historic Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling monasteries. For serious trekkers, the classic Goecha La trek to the Kanchenjunga base camp starts from Yuksom, further into West Sikkim.
A journey to North Sikkim to see the Yumthang valley, known as the valley of flowers, is a multi-day trip that requires a permit arranged in advance.
Getting there.
The most reliable way to reach Namchi is by road. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, which is about a 4-5 hour drive away. The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), with a similar travel time by car.
Sikkim has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), which is closer to Gangtok, but flights here are infrequent and often cancelled or diverted to Bagdogra due to unpredictable weather. For reliable travel planning, Bagdogra remains the better option.
Best time to visit.
Sikkim is best visited in two main windows. The spring season, from March to May, is when the weather is pleasant and the hills are covered in blooming rhododendrons.
The second window is autumn, from October to mid-December. The monsoon has passed, leaving behind clear skies and excellent views of the Himalayan peaks. The winter months that follow are cold but often clear. The monsoon season, from late June to September, sees heavy rain which can cause landslides and frequent road closures.
