This home serves as a base or a stopover on the Spiti circuit, one of the most dramatic road trips in the Indian Himalaya.
Kaza, the administrative hub of Spiti, is the main centre for supplies, fuel, and food. From here, you can visit some of the world's oldest and highest monasteries. Ki Gompa is the most famous, a stunning complex clinging to a hillside. A short drive further takes you to Kibber, once one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in the world, and the gateway to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
The journey itself is the destination. The drive from Manali via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass (open June-October) is a high-altitude adventure. The tunnel, at over 9km long, has made access to the Lahaul valley possible year-round, though the high passes into Spiti remain snowbound in winter.
By Road: This is the only way to reach Spiti. There are two primary routes. The first is from Manali (approx. 200 km), crossing the Rohtang Pass or going via the Atal Tunnel, and then the high-altitude Kunzum Pass. This route is typically open from June to early October. The second is the longer, all-weather (barring landslides) route from Shimla via the Kinnaur valley (approx. 420 km).
By Air: The nearest airport for the Manali route is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu. For the Shimla route, Shimla's airport (SLV) has very limited, weather-dependent flights. The most reliable major airport is Chandigarh (IXC), from which you can hire a cab for the multi-day journey.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you must continue by road. For those traveling via Shimla, the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train is a scenic, albeit slow, way to begin the mountain journey.
The best time to complete the full Spiti circuit via Manali is from June to September. During these months, the snow has melted from the high passes, the days are pleasant, and the roads are open. September and October offer crisp, clear skies after the monsoon, with golden autumn colours in the lower valleys.
The monsoon months of July and August can bring landslides on the approach roads like NH-3 and NH-21. Winter, from December to February, sees heavy snowfall, closing the Manali-Kaza road completely. Access during these months is only possible via the Shimla-Kinnaur road, and conditions can be harsh.
