“The home stay is a typical Himachal Pradesh vilage set up. The hosts are very warm. Can easily spend a day to experience the native village set up and some authentic native food”
The home is a good base for exploring the Spiti circuit. The main town of Kaza, with its market and cafes, is the valley's hub. From there, you can visit the iconic Ki Monastery, perched on a hilltop, or drive to Kibber, once one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. This entire loop is generally only accessible by road from Manali between June and October.
The journey into Spiti is an experience in itself. You will pass through the Atal Tunnel, a 9km engineering marvel that connects Manali to Lahaul year-round. Beyond it lies the high-altitude desert landscape, a stark contrast to the green Kullu valley you leave behind.
By Air: The nearest airport in the hills is Bhuntar (KUU) in the Kullu-Manali valley. However, the most reliable all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC) in the plains. From either airport, it is a long, multi-day road journey to the Spiti Valley.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh (CDG). From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the journey to Manali and onward to Spiti.
By Road: Manali is the primary gateway to Spiti during the summer months (June-October). The road crosses high passes and is a challenging but scenic drive. Taxis are readily available in Manali.
The best time to visit the Spiti Valley is from June to October. This is when the snow has melted from the high passes, and the road from Manali is open. September and October offer crisp air and clear blue skies after the monsoon. The summer months of June and July see the valley at its greenest. The region is cut off by heavy snow from November to May.
