This home is a base for exploring the Spiti Valley circuit. The main town of Kaza, the iconic Ki Monastery perched on a hilltop, and the high-altitude village of Kibber are all accessible by road. This circuit is only open from the Manali side between June and October when the high passes are clear of snow.
The journey to Spiti is an adventure in itself. Most travelers start from Manali, passing through the Atal Tunnel and into the Lahaul valley before climbing over Kunzum Pass into Spiti. Other attractions in Himachal, like the Tsuglagkhang complex in McLeodganj or the paragliding hub of Bir-Billing, are in different valleys and require separate, multi-day travel plans.
By Air: The nearest functional airport for reaching Spiti is Bhuntar (KUU) in Kullu, which serves the Manali region. However, the most reliable all-weather airport is in Chandigarh (IXC), a major city in the plains. From either airport, you will need to continue by road.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, it is a multi-day road trip to the Spiti Valley.
By Road: Manali is the primary road hub and gateway to Spiti via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass. The drive from Manali to Kaza typically takes a full day with an early start. State-run and private buses, as well as shared and private taxis, are available from Manali.
The best time to visit the Spiti Valley is from June to October. This is when the snow has melted from the high passes, and the road from Manali is open. The weather is pleasant during the day, though nights are always cold. September and October offer crisp, clear skies after the monsoon. The valley is cut off by road from the Manali side from roughly November to late May due to heavy snowfall.
