15 to 20 degrees, 5 at night. Dry, clear, uncrowded. Every viewpoint is open. Waterfalls are moderate. Good month for the Double Decker trek, but the descent is cold early morning.

Similar to January, slightly warmer. Cherry blossom trails begin in parts of Khasi Hills. Best weather for Dawki and Shnongpdeng kayaking. Crowds still low.

20 to 25 degrees. Arguably the most comfortable month. Waterfalls rising as pre-monsoon showers start. Trekking conditions are perfect. Book ahead, Holi crowds appear in Shillong.

25 to 28 degrees. Pre-monsoon humidity starts. Root bridges trek is still great. Second half of the month sees first thunderstorms. Flight prices climb before the school holidays.

Monsoon arrives mid-month in Cherrapunji. Waterfalls double in size. Treacherous on roads once rain begins. Shillong is still pleasant. Book flexibility into any late-May trip.

Full monsoon. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram get their famous rain. Waterfalls are insane. Roads to Dawki and Cherrapunji are slippery and prone to landslides. Not the time for first-timers.

Peak monsoon. Gorgeous but limiting. Many village-level homestays shut. Root bridges can be inaccessible if the approach rivers swell. Photographers love this month. Tourists mostly avoid it.

Heaviest rain of the year, especially late August. NH6 sometimes closes. Views are lost to low cloud for days. Skip unless you specifically want monsoon photography and can be flexible.

What about september?

Rain tapers in the second half. Waterfalls still full. Roads reopen. Excellent month if you want high water flow with returning visibility.

Post-monsoon clarity begins. Skies clear by mid-month. Umngot river starts turning transparent. Durga Puja crowds in the first week, then quiet. One of the best months to visit.

Peak season. Cool, dry, every view open. The Umngot river is glass-clear. Double Decker trek is perfect. Book homestays 3 weeks ahead for Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong.

15 to 20 degrees by day, 5 to 8 at night. Quiet in the first half. Heavy crowds between December 23 and January 2. If avoiding Christmas tourists, aim for the first two weeks.

What about what to pack by season?

Dry season (Oct to April): Layers, light fleece, rain shell for any hill-station day, sturdy shoes for root-bridge treks.

What about permits and practicalities?

- No special permit is needed for Indian citizens to enter Meghalaya. - Foreign nationals need a protected area permit for some Garo Hills locations. Plan ahead. - Roads: Dawki route (NH40) is most affected in monsoon. Cherrapunji (NH6) is better but not immune. - Flights: Fly into Guwahati (GAU), not Shillong. GAU has 20 times the flight options.

What about pairing with homestays?

Whichever month you pick, booking a homestay over a hotel gets you the local weather advice Google will not give you.

What about two-line recommendation?

If you want guaranteed sun and clear views, visit in November or March. If you want green drama and waterfalls, come in late September. Skip August unless you have a specific reason.
