The drive ends at Laitduh village, where stone-built rooms sit on a rise above green pastureland and cattle graze within earshot of falling water. Wind sweeps up from the canyon, carrying mist across stone thresholds and through open balcony doors. Inside, six private bedrooms each come with their own dedicated bathroom, fitted with king beds, timber side tables, standing fans, and kettles with tea and coffee supplies. Heavy extra blankets rest inside wooden wardrobes for cool nights when temperatures drop over Sohra. Every room opens onto a wide back balcony that faces directly toward the plunge of Dainthlen falls. You can sit on plastic armchairs with a mug of hot tea and watch clouds climb out of the ravine, or look up at clear night skies filled with stars. Breakfast and meals come served straight to your room from the on-site kitchen. Yo, the cook, prepares steaming hot aloo parathas with homemade pickle each morning, crispy onion pakoras in the afternoon, and local Khasi chicken for dinner. Wei Sawdong waterfall sits just down the slope from the home. You can take a short downhill hike through the trees accompanied by Evan or follow the trail independently to reach the tiered blue pools.

Dainthlen falls lies directly across the valley, where the river sheets over flat rock beds before dropping off the cliff edge. It is an easy walk along the gorge rim to stand where the water breaks.

Nohkalikai falls drops 340 meters in a single plunge further south near Cherrapunji town, making it India's tallest plunge waterfall. The viewpoint overlooks a deep turquoise pool framed by sheer rock walls.

Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves offer accessible limestone cave networks nearby. Lighted stone paths take you through narrow rock squeezes and wide natural caverns filled with stalactites.

The Nongriat double-decker living root bridge requires a descent of 3,500 stone steps down the valley from Tyrna village. The hike takes a full day, descending through rainforest to reach ancient rubber tree roots woven across mountain streams.

Mawlynnong village sits further east along the ridge, known for stone paths, flower gardens, and the bamboo Riwai sky walk overlooking the plains.

The Umngot river at Dawki lies near the border crossing into Bangladesh. Between January and March, the river runs glass-clear, allowing wooden boats to float over visible riverbeds.

Getting there.

Guwahati airport is the primary entry point for Meghalaya, located 100 km from Shillong. The drive from Guwahati to Cherrapunji takes roughly four to five hours along winding hill roads.

Shillong airport at Umroi sits 30 km outside Shillong city and handles select regional flights, primarily connecting through Kolkata.

Guwahati railway station is the nearest major train terminal, located 100 km away. No railway lines operate within the state of Meghalaya.

From Shillong, Cherrapunji town is a 53 km drive along a scenic ridge route that takes around two hours by car. The home sits in Laitduh village, a short drive past the main town market.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

October through April brings dry weather, clear blue skies, and crisp mountain air. Nights get cool between December and February, requiring thick blankets, but daytime temperatures remain ideal for hiking and cave visits.

Monsoon runs from June through September, bringing over 10,000 mm of rainfall to the Sohra plateau. Waterfalls swell to full volume and the landscape turns deep green, though heavy rains can temporarily close cave entry points and steep trails.
