“I stayed for two nights in the room adjacent to the office on ground level. Food- Delicious food. There is a 6 seater table setup in kitchen itself. That means the owner has audacity to invite and dine in their customers in the kitchen itself. Clearly means that the Kitchen is hygenic and clean all the time. You can literally see the helpers preparing food ...”

The main draw is the Nongriat double-decker living root bridge, a challenging but rewarding 3,500-step descent and ascent from the village. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
Beyond the bridges, the Cherrapunji (Sohra) area is full of natural wonders. You can explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, which are well-lit and accessible for most visitors. A short drive away is the Nohkalikai falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, especially powerful during the monsoon.
Further afield, a day trip to Dawki takes you to the border with Bangladesh and the crystal-clear Umngot river. The water is clearest from January to March, perfect for a boat ride. Nearby is Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, with its own root bridge and a bamboo sky walk offering views over the plains of Bangladesh.
By Air: The most common airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. From there, it's a 3-4 hour taxi ride to Shillong, and another 2-3 hours to Tyrna. A smaller airport is in Shillong (SHL) at Umroi, 30km from the city, with limited flights mostly from Kolkata.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, about 100km from Shillong. There is no rail connectivity within Meghalaya. From the station, you can hire a taxi for the journey.
By Road: Shillong is the main hub for exploring the Khasi Hills. Tyrna village, where the home is, is the starting point for the Nongriat trek and is reached via a winding road from Cherrapunji (Sohra), which is 53km from Shillong.
The best time to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The skies are clear, and all attractions, including caves and waterfalls, are accessible. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings over 10,000mm of rain. This transforms the landscape into an incredibly lush green, but be prepared for heavy downpours, closed trails, and leeches.
