Things to do nearby.
Cherrapunji, or Sohra as it's known locally, is a circuit of waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints. A car is needed to explore the area.
Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, is a short drive away. The view is most dramatic just after the monsoon season when the water is at its peak. Seven Sisters Falls, or Nohsngithiang Falls, is another worth seeing, a wide, segmented waterfall best viewed from the Sohra viewpoint.
For a bit of easy adventure, the Mawsmai Caves offer a walk-through experience in a lit limestone cave system. For a more demanding trek, the trail to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge starts at Tyrna village. Be prepared for a descent of over 3,500 steps into the valley of Nongriat.
A popular day trip is to the Umngot River in Dawki, about 80km away. The water is famously clear, and boating is the main activity. For the best "glass-boat" experience, visit between January and March. On the way, you can also stop at Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village, and see the nearby Riwai root bridge.

Best time to visit.
The best time for clear skies and dry trekking trails is from October to April. The views of the valleys and waterfalls are sharpest during these months.
However, the monsoon, from June to September, is Cherrapunji's defining season. This is when the waterfalls are at their most powerful and the landscape is a deep, lush green. While trekking can be muddy and some viewpoints might be covered in fog, experiencing one of the wettest places on Earth during its peak rainfall is an experience in itself.
