The road ends in a quiet part of Shillong, away from the noise of Police Bazar. The first thing you notice is the sound - just the wind in the pine trees that surround the home. The rooms are simple, neat, and clean, with king-sized beds and attached bathrooms with a shower. Some rooms also have a bathtub. Each room has a small balcony, a place to sit and look out into the forest. There’s a small desk and chair for writing, and a wardrobe for your things. The owner is around, and the staff are known for being helpful. The food is a real focus here. The home is a good point from which to explore Shillong and the Khasi Hills, provided you have a car for day trips. Ward's Lake, a 19th-century horse-shoe lake, is a short drive away for a quiet walk or a paddle boat ride. For a look into the region's culture, the Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures has seven floors of exhibits on the tribes of Northeast India.

About 12km from town are the three-tiered Elephant Falls, an easy half-day trip. On a clear day, drive up to Shillong Peak, the highest point in the area at 1,965 metres, for views across the valley. For more dramatic landscapes, Laitlum Canyons, known as the 'end of the hills', is about 25km away. A guided walk through the Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a dense Khasi forest, is another option for a day out.

Getting there.

The most common way to arrive is by air into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is about 100km away. The drive to Shillong takes around 3 hours on National Highway 6. Shillong also has its own airport in Umroi (SHL), just 30km from the city, but it has limited flights, mostly from Kolkata, and can be affected by weather.

The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, also 100km away. From either the Guwahati airport or train station, you can hire a private taxi or take a shared Sumo to Shillong.

Best time to visit.

The clearest skies and most pleasant weather are from October to April. This is the best time for sightseeing and long drives, with crisp mornings and sunny days. The monsoon arrives in June and lasts through September, bringing the heavy rains the region is famous for. While the landscape turns a vivid green, some roads and sights may be temporarily closed.
