Rishikesh is a hub for both spiritual seeking and adventure in the Garhwal Himalaya. Every evening, you can witness the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, a powerful ceremony of light and sound on the riverbank. The town is also the starting point for rafting on the Ganga.
For treks and high-altitude destinations, Chopta is the base for the 4-hour climb to Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple, and the Chandrashila peak beyond it. During the monsoon months of July to September, the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, opens for a spectacular display of alpine flora. In winter (December-March), Auli offers skiing on its oak and rhododendron-lined slopes. For wildlife, Jim Corbett National Park, home to tigers, is accessible from the Ramnagar gate and is open from October to June.
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, which serves the Garhwal region. Taxis are available for the one-hour drive to Rishikesh.
By Rail: Haridwar is the closest major railway station. From there, Rishikesh is about a 45-minute drive by taxi or local bus.
By Road: Rishikesh is a major road hub in Uttarakhand, well-connected to Delhi and other North Indian cities. It serves as the gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
The weather is pleasant year-round, but the best times are from March to June and September to November, when the skies are clear and the weather is ideal for sightseeing and trekking. The monsoon season (July and August) brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides on mountain roads. Winters (December to February) are cold, and high-altitude destinations like Auli and Chopta may be closed by snow.
