The drive ends on a quiet road, and the first thing you notice is the sound of wind through the pine forest that surrounds the home. A simple gravel path runs along a lawn to the front of the two-storey building. The home is run by an ex-army man and his family, and has a simple, disciplined feel. The property is well-suited for large families or groups travelling together. It has nine rooms in total, each with its own attached bathroom. The rooms are neat and functional, with king beds and large windows that look out onto the green hills. There is a small plunge pool in the garden, and ample, safe parking on the premises. The ground floor has a long, shared verandah with pillars, a good spot to sit with a cup of tea. Guests often mention the quiet of the location. The home is a good halt on the Char Dham circuit, particularly for the Yamunotri yatra. Beyond the pilgrimage, the Garhwal region offers some of the country's most significant treks and natural sights.

Rishikesh, the gateway to Garhwal, is where the journey often begins. The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan is a powerful experience, with lamps and chants echoing over the river.

For serious trekkers, Chopta is the starting point for the climb to Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple. The 4-hour climb is rewarded with panoramic views, and a further push takes you to the Chandrashila summit.

The Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is accessible from the Govindghat trailhead. It is open only during the monsoon months, from July to September, when the valley floor is a carpet of alpine flowers.

Auli offers vast oak and rhododendron meadows in the summer. In winter, from December to March, its slopes become one of India's premier skiing destinations.

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, which serves the entire Garhwal region. From the airport, you will need to hire a taxi for the road journey to Barkot.

By Rail: The closest major railhead is in Haridwar (HW). It is well-connected to major Indian cities. From Haridwar, taxis and buses are available for the journey uphill.

By Road: Rishikesh is the primary road hub for Garhwal. The drive from Rishikesh to Barkot takes you along winding mountain roads. The home is accessible by car.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The Western Himalayas are a year-round destination, but different seasons offer different sights. The clearest skies are found from March to June and again after the monsoon, from September to November. This is the best time for views and comfortable travel.

The monsoon months of July and August bring lush greenery but also the risk of landslides, and travel can be unpredictable. High-altitude destinations like Auli and Chopta often close from December to February due to heavy snowfall.
