The road to Spiti is long. The air is thin. You arrive to a simple white house with prayer flags fluttering against a backdrop of bare, brown mountains. Inside, the feeling is one of warmth. A traditional metal stove, a *bukhari*, heats the common room where guests gather on low seating, over carpets. The kettle is always on. The home has six bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, accommodating up to twelve guests in total. Rooms are clean and simple, some with wood-paneled, sloped ceilings that feel like a cabin. Large windows look out onto the valley and the small village garden where vegetables are grown for the kitchen. There are king-sized beds, balconies for sitting out in the sharp Spiti sun, and a quiet that settles in after dark. The hospitality is what guests remember most. It’s not formal, it’s familial. The home is a good starting point for exploring the main sights of the Spiti Valley.

Key Monastery is the largest in Spiti and over a thousand years old. It’s a short drive away, a white-washed complex clinging to a conical hilltop, with beautiful views down into the valley.

Kibber village, at 4,270 meters, is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. The drive itself is the main event, with vast landscapes opening up around every turn.

Chicham Bridge is an engineering sight, a suspension bridge hanging high over a deep gorge. It connects the villages of Chicham and Kibber and saves a long, winding drive. Walk across for the views.

Pin Valley National Park is a bit further afield, but it's known for its wildlife, especially as a habitat for the snow leopard and Siberian ibex. The landscape here is starker, with shades of green and purple in the rock.

Langza is famous for its large Buddha statue overlooking the valley and for the ancient marine fossils found in the rocks nearby. It sits about 1,000 feet above Kaza.

Logistics

Getting there.

The journey to Spiti is a significant part of the experience. There are two main road routes.

By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 220 km away via Manali and the Kunzum Pass, and Shimla Airport (SLV), about 410 km away. Both require a multi-day road journey to reach Spiti.

By Road: From Manali, the distance is around 200 km via the Kunzum Pass. This route is only open from roughly June to October and a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. From Shimla, the route is longer at 410 km via Kinnaur, but it is open for more months of the year (typically April to November) and allows for more gradual acclimatization.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. The narrow-gauge toy train runs to Shimla, which is still a 410 km drive from Spiti.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The main season for travelers is from May to October, when the roads from both Manali and Shimla are typically open. The weather is pleasant during the day, with clear skies and strong sun.

From November to April, the road from Manali via Kunzum Pass is closed due to heavy snow. Access is only possible from the Shimla side, and conditions can be extremely cold. This is a time for the hardiest travelers, who come for the deep snow and solitude.
