Getting there.
Kalpa is in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, a region known for its long, winding mountain roads.
By Air: The nearest major airport is in Chandigarh (IXC). Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport (SLV) is closer but has very limited, weather-dependent flights. From either airport, you will need to continue the journey by road, which takes over a day.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Kalka, which connects to the UNESCO heritage toy train line to Shimla. Chandigarh (CDG) is the most well-connected railhead in the plains. From the station, you can hire a taxi for the drive up to Kalpa.
By Road: Kalpa is accessible by road, primarily via NH-5 from Shimla. The journey is scenic but long. Reckong Peo is the nearest large town and district headquarters.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit Kalpa is in the spring and summer months, from March to June, when the snow melts and the weather is pleasant. Another clear window is post-monsoon, from September to November, when the skies are clear and offer the best mountain views.
The monsoon months of July and August can bring heavy rain and increase the risk of landslides on the highways. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snowfall, which can sometimes block roads but offers a different kind of beauty.
