Key Monastery sits perched on a towering cliff above the Spiti River, roughly 14 kilometers away. It is the largest monastery in the valley, housing ancient murals, thangkas, and wind-blown prayer flags across a thousand years of history. Visitors can sit quietly with the monks during morning prayers or walk the steep stone steps between the whitewashed monks' quarters.
Kibber village lies higher up the valley at an altitude of 4,270 meters. Known as one of the highest motorable villages in the world, it holds traditional mud-brick houses, high-altitude barley fields, and stone trails leading toward the surrounding wildlife sanctuary.
Chicham Bridge crosses a deep gorge near Kibber, spanning Asia's highest suspension gap. Driving or walking across offers views straight down into the narrow canyon floor below.
Pin Valley National Park stretches south from the main Spiti trough, acting as a protected habitat for snow leopards, ibex, and Himalayan marmots. A trip into the valley requires a sturdy vehicle and a full day to explore the cold-desert landscape and high mountain hamlets.
Langza and the fossil village sit over 1,000 feet above Kaza, dominated by a large statue of Lord Buddha overlooking the valley. The ground around the village contains marine fossils embedded in sedimentary rock from the ancient Tethys Sea, reachable via a short drive along winding mountain roads.
Getting there.
Traveling from Manali involves a 200 km drive across Kunzum La pass, accessible strictly between June and October. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended for this stretch due to unpaved gravel, water crossings, and high mountain mud paths.
The route from Shimla covers 410 km along the Kinnaur valley highway. While longer, this road stays open across more months of the year, usually from April through November, offering a gradual gain in altitude before reaching Kaza.
Bhuntar Airport near Kullu sits 220 km away via Manali and Kunzum La. Shimla Airport and the Shimla toy train railhead sit 410 km away. Kaza, the district headquarters, sits close by for fuel refills, basic medical supplies, and market visits.
Best time to visit.
May to October is the primary season for road travel into Spiti Valley. During these months, the passes remain open, days are bright, and roads from both Manali and Shimla allow vehicular access across the valley floor.
November through April brings deep winter and freezing temperatures. The road from Manali over Kunzum La closes completely under heavy snow, leaving the route through Kinnaur from Shimla as the only reachable land access when weather permits.
