The last 100 metres to the home are on a rough driveway, so go slow. The house itself is a simple, single-storey building with a long verandah looking out onto an open yard. Inside, there are three private bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom. The rooms are straightforward and kept clean, with a king-sized bed and a small table. Sunlight comes in through the windows in the morning. Bathrooms are basic, with a toilet and a geyser for hot water. As one guest, Murali, noted, "The room was clean and well maintained, the staff were warm and welcoming." The main draw for many is the open space outside. On cold nights, the owner can help set up a fire. Another guest, Snehil, said the "owner also arranged for bonfire for us." It's a quiet spot to rest after a long day of trekking.

Things to do nearby.

The home is a short drive from Cherrapunji’s main sights. The Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, is nearby. You can also explore the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, both known for their limestone formations.

For a longer day trip, you can drive to the village of Nongriat to see the famous double-decker living root bridge. The trek down involves descending about 3,500 steps into the valley, so start early and be prepared for a strenuous climb back up.

The crystal-clear Umngot river in Dawki, on the Bangladesh border, is about a 2.5-hour drive away. The water is clearest from January to March. Nearby is Mawlynnong, often called Asia’s cleanest village, with its own smaller root bridge and a sky walk made of bamboo.

By air: The nearest airport is Shillong (SHL), about 83 km or a 3-hour drive away. It has limited flights, mostly connecting through Kolkata. The more common arrival airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam, which is about 153 km or a 4-5 hour drive away.

By rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, Assam. There is no rail connectivity in Meghalaya. From the station, you can hire a taxi for the 4-5 hour drive to Cherrapunji.

By road: Cherrapunji (also known as Sohra) is a 53 km drive from Shillong, the state capital. The road is scenic but has many sharp bends.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Cherrapunji is from October to April, when the skies are clearer and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal season for trekking and caving. The monsoon, from June to September, is intense, with the region receiving some of the highest rainfall in the world. While the landscape becomes incredibly green and the waterfalls are at their most powerful, some caves and trek routes may be closed.
