It’s a simple, newly-built place run by Choden, Sonam, and their family, a short walk from the Tawang Monastery. The home has three bedrooms, each with a king bed and its own attached bathroom, for a total of six guests. The rooms are lined with wood panelling, floor to ceiling, which keeps them warm against the mountain air. Each room opens onto a long shared balcony with views of the valley. Guests have noted that the washrooms are on the smaller side. The common area has a dining table where meals are served. The kitchen is the heart of the stay. The family prepares fresh, hot breakfast and dinner. If you’re heading out for the day, they will pack you a lunch in a casserole with plates and spoons. One guest recalls, "We requested some local cuisine, and the host not only prepared it fresh but also invited us into their kitchen to watch and participate in the cooking process." Tawang is a high-altitude town with a few key sights, all requiring a bit of a drive on mountain roads.

Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. Founded in the 17th century, it’s a sprawling complex that houses hundreds of monks. The home is a short distance away.

Sela Pass, at an elevation of 4,170 meters, is the high-altitude gateway to Tawang district. The pass and the adjoining Sela Lake are often frozen or covered in snow during the winter months. The drive itself is the main event.

Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, is about 45 km from Tawang. The lake was formed by an earthquake and is named after a Bollywood actress who filmed a song here. The landscape is stark, with dead tree trunks rising from the water.

Bumla Pass is on the Indo-China border, 37 km from Tawang. It sits at over 4,600 meters. A special permit, arranged in Tawang, is required to visit. The hosts can help arrange a local driver, which is recommended for the terrain.

The journey to Tawang is a significant part of the experience and takes at least two days of driving.

By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam, about 480 km away. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer at 320 km, but has fewer flight connections. From either airport, you will need to hire a taxi for the multi-day road trip.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam, around 280 km from Tawang. Taxis are available from the station.

By Road: The drive begins from the plains of Assam, entering Arunachal Pradesh at the Bhalukpong checkpost, where Inner Line Permits are verified. Most travelers make an overnight stop in Bomdila (165 km from Tawang) or Dirang before continuing the next day over the Sela Pass to Tawang. The roads are winding mountain hairpins, and total drive time from Guwahati is typically 14-16 hours, split over two days.

The best months to visit Tawang are from March to October, when the weather is clearer and the roads are more accessible. September is particularly pleasant. The winter, from December to February, sees heavy snowfall, which can cause the Sela Pass to close for periods, cutting off access to the town.
