The first thing you notice is the view. From the outdoor terrace, prayer flags flutter against a backdrop of the Tawang valley, often covered in snow. This is a family-run home, and the feeling is one of warmth against the cold mountain air. The home has six rooms, each simply furnished with wooden beds and kept clean. They are built for the weather here, with room heaters, geysers for hot water, and heated beds to make the nights easy. Some rooms have a king bed, others have twin beds, and some have an extra bed for a third person. The heart of the home is the kitchen, run by Pema di and her brother. Guests speak of the food often. "Every meal felt like homemade love served on a plate." The menu is simple, local, and made to order - things like chicken thenthuk, momos, and mixed fried rice. Breakfast is included with your stay. Tawang is a place of high passes and old monasteries. The hosts can help you arrange a local vehicle, which is the best way to get around.

Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. It was founded in the 17th century and sits on a ridge overlooking the valley. It's an active centre for Buddhist learning.

Sela Pass, at an altitude of 4,170 metres, is the high-altitude gateway to Tawang. The drive is spectacular, and the pass is home to the beautiful Sela Lake, which often remains frozen through the winter.

Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, is about 45km from Tawang. It was formed by an earthquake and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The lake is named after the Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a song here.

Bumla Pass is on the Indo-China border, about 37km from Tawang. It's a starkly beautiful landscape at over 4,600 metres. A special permit is required to visit, which the hosts can help you secure.

Getting there.

The journey to Tawang is part of the experience. The roads are winding and the drives are long, but the views are worth it.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km away. The drive from Guwahati to Tawang takes two full days, with an overnight stop usually in Bomdila or Dirang. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer at 320km, but has fewer flight connections.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam, around 280km from Tawang. From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle for the 10-12 hour drive.

By Road: You enter Arunachal Pradesh at the Bhalukpong checkpost, where your Inner Line Permit will be checked. The road then climbs through Bomdila (165km from Tawang) and over the Sela Pass. Expect drives of 8-10 hours between major towns.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit Tawang are from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. Spring (March-April) sees rhododendrons in bloom. Autumn (September-October) offers clear skies and crisp mountain air. The Ziro Music Festival, a major cultural event in the region, takes place in September.

Winter, from December to February, is very cold, with heavy snowfall. Sela Pass can sometimes be closed to traffic, cutting off access to Tawang.
